Paying Attention To Nutrition Can Be Delicious!

By Meredith Henner

So many people struggle trying to reach a great level of health and fitness. But once you have mastered sound nutrition, the struggling ends and you can lose weight and become a healthier version of you. You simply need to understand what foods you should be putting into your body and what foods you shouldn't be.

Here is the first rule you must master on your path to better nutrition. You need to start paying better attention to food labels. Often the labels that claim to be fat free or have no trans fat are the ones that have the highest sugar content. This is because the sugar helps to elevate the taste left out by the other two. Checking the labels carefully will help you stay away from these supposed healthier choices.

Some foods like beans, bananas, sweet potatoes and tomatoes can help to improve your potassium intake. Potassium will lower your blood pressure and help you avoid heart disease and other ailments, including diabetes. Other often overlooked sources of potassium are dairy products and yogurt.

If you really want to not eat unhealthy food, do not even bring it into the house. Why tempt yourself or drive yourself nuts knowing there is ice cream in the freezer.

If you are having a hard time cutting out sugary drinks try just cutting them in half. You can unknowingly consume tons of calories when you drink sugary drinks. Knowing the true amount is useful for determining whether or not you drink too much.

Enjoy a rainbow colored selection of foods every day. All the colors of the rainbow are your clue to finding fresh fruits and vegetables that keep you nourished without unnecessary calories. Try to eat one of these fruits or vegetables with every meal. Eating the skin of your fruits and veggies is important, because that is where most of the antioxidants and nutrients are.

Food as a reward is not the best nutritional habit to instill in your child. Try offering attention instead. Show them your love with hugs and kisses rather than chocolate, ice cream or donuts. You do not want your child to begin to associate food with affection and love or as a reward for doing what they need to do.

Acquiring better nutritional habits is a learning process. The tips presented in this article are solid, but only the tip of the iceberg. If you're really serious, do your homework and learn everything you can about proper nutrition. Your body will thank you.
