There seems to be a bit of controversy lately on this subject in
the media. Although I'm not a medical expert I consider myself an expert
on reaping ALL of the rewards Yoga can bring, and I say absolutely yes
it can contribute to weight loss!
Yoga encompasses many things, however on the surface, concentrates on muscle strengthening by holding various poses. I have read many articles from the medical industry and most experts say that by building more muscle you will burn more calories. Then it would make sense, based solely on building strong muscles, practicing Yoga can contribute to weight loss.
Each and every one of us is at a different fitness level and we each have our own challenges when it comes to our bodies. So for those of us who need something less vigorous or maybe for medical reasons cannot implement a high impact program, this is the perfect solution. As we all know, increasing our activity level contributes to weight loss so if practicing can help someone get off the couch and do it; I say yes again, Yoga contributes to weight loss!
Yoga also practices relaxation exercises and also includes the practice of deep cleansing breaths which are healing and energizing in themselves. I'm sure you're asking, "How can relaxation and breathing help with weight loss?" Let's face it, we live in a world that demands everything from us, we are exhausted and stressed as a result. By practicing simple stretching and relaxation exercises, we can give our minds and bodies a well deserved escape from everyday life. We can slow down the Cortisol flood that contributes to weight gain and so many other health issues we face today. And it provides us the extra energy we all crave and deserve!
There are so many huge benefits to practicing Yoga I can't possibly list them all, but specifically on the original topic of weight loss. In my opinion, increasing daily activity, even if it is low impact is always better than nothing at all. Increasing muscle mass and strength, increased energy and stress reduction are all major players in the weight loss process. Of course you always need to have a healthy eating plan along with any form of exercise program, but if you are still on the fence give it a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and have an answer to the question!
