The Physics Of Military Antenna Mast

By Tammie Caldwell

Antennas used in military operations need to be functional, effective, and handy. There are so many innovations of antennas that weigh very lightly. Such designs are more preferred because militaries are already bringing a lot of heavy ammunitions and weapons. In manufacturing these, it is a never ending exploration and experimentation in order to come up with a final product that is cost effective and will require low cost manufacturing.

Some of the most reliable systems in military operations are RF and Satellite Communications. The use of military antenna mast is crucial for both. But there are things to consider in manufacturing these innovations, like the bandwidth, size, and materials. The cost of manufacture and labor are also included. Hence, it is never easy to modify or improve antennas.

But there is a never ending issue regarding the size of these masts. Designers and manufacturers find it really difficult to shrink the properties of these devices because of the fact that higher frequencies have bigger and longer radio waves. Hence, the bigger the antenna is, the more efficient it will be in capturing signals under low frequency environments.

Some of the most efficiently working systems are those that have antennas even taller than a man. These are very inconvenient to bring especially in battlegrounds where the men will be running around and using their heavy armors. The taller they are, the better they will be able to receive radio signals.

Professional designers of military communication equipment have always emphasized, based on the physics of this innovation, that higher frequency capabilities are more advantageous for the heavier and bigger ones. They acknowledge the inconvenience in bringing them to battlefields, but they are also after the efficiency and functionality. If they shrink down the size, tendency is they may not be able to serve their functions best which is to communicate with their comrades.

Many are suggesting to use the cell phone innovation instead to use in war areas. This could be the answer of the plea of the soldiers to have a really small and handy antenna to use for connecting with their comrades. But experts say that this is not as easy as it seems. A less scientific explanation that will best describe the reason why these cannot be used is that it is susceptible to many kinds of interferences.

Cell phones still need extensive and intensive signals that are based on the ground because they do not depend on radio frequencies. There are few or no signal infrastructures for mobile phones in war areas so it will be such a hassle trying to get a reception that will likely give the best communication systems integration from one area to another. Having limited service will lead to risks especially in emergency cases.

With these information made known, it can be concluded safely that the RF communication systems could be the only mode of communication in the field. But studies are still ongoing on how to grant the requests of users about a less heavier and more handy antennas. This is the work of an applications engineer and a designer to make sure that the devices are then tested properly.

Also, satellite communications are very efficient. These can be used in information dissemination quicker and more efficiently. These are the ones being used by armies to report the locations of enemies using communication codes.
