Effortless Ways Of Controlling Urinary Incontinence

By Enid Hinton

Urinary incontinence is basically defined as loss of control over your bladder. It is exhibited by minor leakages or total loss of bladder content. Depending on the cause, a patient may be described as temporarily or terminally ill. This condition is common to people at old age. Experts have suggested several ways of controlling urinary incontinence.

Exercise- Exercise is recommended for both men and women in spite of their age. These exercises target the pelvic muscle around the bladder with the aim of strengthening them. Leakage is mainly attributed to weakness of these muscles. You are required to pull in and squeeze the bladder as if you are stopping urine. Try to hold on for about ten minutes. This exercise should be repeated several times every day.

Just like building biceps, exercises take a while to deliver results. On average, you will experience change within six weeks. Do not stop the exercise until you have regained full control of your bladder. No special equipment are required and these exercises can be conducted anywhere without attracting unnecessary attention.

A toilet schedule- this requires the patient to develop a constant schedule for visiting the washrooms. It should be done regardless of whether the bladder is full. The brain picks up the habit and naturalizes it. The bladder adapts to this schedule giving you better control.

Shed weight and stop smoking- obesity has been blamed for lost bladder control alongside smoking. The excess weight exerts pressure on the bladder causing it to give way. Smoking comes with a persistent cough that weakens muscles around the bladder. The two measures ensure that your bladder operates normally and is under no external pressure.

Keep off alcohol and caffeine blended products- alcohol causes muscles surrounding the bladder to weaken and so does caffeine. Once you have identified these catalysts, it is advisable to avoid them. Alcohol might also hinder the transfer of signal to the brain that the bladder is full. It will be tool late by the time you get to the toilet.

Medication- There are excellent medical remedies for the different manifestations of this condition. It takes correct diagnosis for the physician to recommend the right medication. The diagnosis should establish if the cause is alcohol, pregnancy, age, smoking or obesity before prescribing any medicine.

Varying causes make accurate diagnosis a challenge. The physician requires you to document your fluid consumption, quantities and incidences of lost control. This is the information used to develop the best solution. Ultrasound and physical examination are also carried out.

The condition comes with other secondary symptoms that you should be aware of. They include skin infections that arise out of prolonged dampness of the pelvic region. This may spread to other areas in the body. The other risks are infections on the urinary track.

It is important to note that all forms of urinary incontinence are manageable. It does not matter whether it is stress, urge or overflow related. A large population suffers from this condition and is thus not a cause for embarrassment. Mild cases are pretty simple to manage. There are products designed for such conditions including special under wears. Exercises also go a long way while the ultimate solution lies with your doctor.
