It however is important for one to know how to carry out general repairs from home.

Wear and tear of slate can be seen through the presence of cracks within it. There are a number of useful tips for helping to repair the billiard so that it is restored to its attractiveness. The repairs can be best attended to after the felt is separated from the table. This will make it easy to carry out repairs more comprehensively. A socket wrench will be important for this. It is used for removing bolts attaching the rails to the table.

After the rails have been removed, the next thing is to remove the staples attaching the felt to the table. The best tool would be a staple puller but a screwdriver may also be used. The screwdriver needs to have a head that is flat. The removed staples should be kept carefully on the side because they may cause injury if one steps on them. They may also be misplaced.

The slate needs to be inspected to determine the extent of the cracks on it. Filling of the fine cracks and small chips is done using beeswax. The beeswax stick is held some 4 inches above the crack before the wax is melted using a small portable propane torch. It should then be left to drip within the crack.

Slate normally requires a lot of wax to bond effectively. After the wax has cooled well, a paint scraper is used to remove any excess wax. The excess wax needs to be removed because it will lead to the slate having an unpleasant appearance. The wax should also be placed carefully and in the right amounts so that it dries up and fills the cracks more effectively.

The other option is to use billiard table wax. It contains resin that will harden in a better way as compared to beeswax and gives a durable outcome. Billiard wax is the best option for bigger cracks. The excess wax will need to be removed in this case as well before the slate is wiped using damp sponge. Billiard table wax also comes in handy when you have to seal loose seams that are on the slate.

If the cracks are more extensive, the best option to use will be slate repair glue. This has thick consistency that helps to effectively bond the slate. This is applied inside the crack on both sides. The two separate sides of the slate are pushed together firmly. They are held together for a while so that the glue bonds the separate pieces of slate.

Because of the pressure of the slate being pushed together, some glue may seep out. The glue should be left to dry up. After that, it is smoothed down using sandpaper. After repairs are complete, the felt is returned to position.
